Do you think of me, honey? Prepositional case

Hi there!

Hooray! This is the final post of the mini-project “The Six Cases of Personal Pronouns. Today we are going to study the Prepositional case or Предлóжный паде́ж. The case is called Prepositional, because the pronouns and nouns when used in this case always need prepositions.

The preposition we are going to work with today is 'about'. In Russian it will be 'o'. Again just one letter :-) Again super easy! With the pronoun I, however, you will be using 'обо' instead of 'o'.

Below you can see how the pattern is spelled, and to listen and practice the pronunciation of the pattern, please, go here.

Обо мнé (about me), о тебé (about you / informal, singular), о нём (about him), о нéй (about her), о нём (about it), о нáс (about us), о вáс / Вáс (about you formal / plural), о ни́х (about them).

Let's remember our lovers from the pod-cast about the words of love.
He asks her: Скажи́, ты лю́бишь меня́? (Say, do you love me?). And she answers: Да, я люблю́ тебя́ (Yes, I love you).

Then asks her: Ты дýмаешь обо мнé, дорогáя? (Do you think about me, honey?)
She answers: О дáя дýмаю о тебé. Я дýмаю о тебé кáждый день. (Oh yes, I think of you. I think of you every day).

Still, the pattern with the verb 'to think' / 'дýмать' might be of some use not only in such explicitly romantic context.

Что Вы дýмаете о нём как о специали́сте? What do you think of him as an expert?
Что Вы дýмаете о ней как о челове́ке? What do you think of her as a personality?

Below you can see the basic pattern with the translation. To practice the pronunciation of there phrases, please, visit the related pod-cast episode on SoundCloud by clicking this link.

Что – what, я дýмаю - I think, Вы дýмаете - you think / do you think (formal / plural).

Что Вы дýмаете обо мне́- What do you think about me?
Что я дýмаю о тебе́- What do I think of you? (informal)
Что Вы дýмаете о нём? - What do you think of him?
Что Вы дýмаете о не́й? - What do you think of her?
Что Вы дýмаете о на́с? - What do you think of us?
Что я дýмаю о Ва́с? - What do I think of you?
Что Вы дýмаете о ни́х? - What do you think of them?

Another useful pattern will be 'Расскажи́те мне о нём, пожа́луйста'. But to look at it closer we need to study the conjugations of the verbs. So there is still so much to learn for us ;-)

Congratulations! We have made it! Now you know all the cases of Personal Pronouns.

Please, give this set of a pod-casts a couple of listenings while driving your car or doing the dishes. Let these phrases stick into your mind, until they start coming our naturally / automatically. When learning Russian it is a really good idea to focus on integrated structures. Not rules, not individual words, but entire phrases and sentences. Because in every new environment words will appear in different forms. Polishing the basic phrases without thinking to much about grammar rules will make your life much easier when you start working on becoming more fluent.

Have you got any questions or suggestions? It is so important for me to know your opinion. Please, leave your feedback below.

Thank you for being with me! Спаси́бо, что Вы со мнóй!

My next mini-projects will be devoted to speed learning of the Russian alphabet and the conjugations of verbs.

Best wishes to you! Уда́чи! До скóрой встре́чи!
